Self care Sunday | turning a house into home
What makes a house a home is a question I think many people ask themselves.
Even when I am settled in a place, I find myself wandering through Gypsy Housing and EasyStreet.com, looking at what’s on the market, envisioning where my plants and paintings could hang. One day I stopped to think about what really made a home and if does it come from the perfect pre-historic crown molding and a ton of counter space, or does it come from within?
Here are some tips I’ve learned throughout the years when turning a space into my own.
Plants, plants, and more plants—
Adding a little green to your space, especially when living in a city, is a great way to bring nature inside and add beauty to a place.
Create a space where creativity can bloom—
This is such an important one! As a writer and creative person, I find my space influences my productivity and how inspired I feel. Having art, photographs, (and plants) around me makes for an easier time when I sit down to work.
Cozy is key (for me)—
Good rugs, comfy throws, warm lighting, and pillows, a quality mattress…all of these things enhance your living and love for a space. Some of my favorite mornings consist of gloomy days and reading a good book, wrapped in a comfy blanket on my couch.
Candles, incense, essential oils—
While not everyone is into smells, I know they can have a big effect on my mood and how relaxed I am. Lighting candles at night or using essential oils, either in a diffuser or while showering, can make a space feel warm, inviting, and give you the mental clarity you deserve.
Lighting is everything—
Waking up to the the sun is wonderful and having warm lightening during night and wintertime is a must.
Separate work and relaxation—
If possible, I think it’s great to keep your bed, couch, and other designated TLC zones as just that. Save work for an office or at least your desk.
